What is board games?

Why are board games fun to play?

One of the great aspects of board game design is that it places people around a table setting where they are facing one another. This makes most board games a sociable experience that can be enjoyed with family and friends. Since there is usually an element of chance that comes into the gameplay, newcomers and less tactically skilled players will always have a chance of winning. This is in contrast to physical games, for example, where stronger and more skilled players usually win. As such, everyone in a family can play with a more or less equal chance of winning.

Can board games make you smarter?

Because many board games rely on tactical decision making, they help people to think logically rather than instinctively. This can help players to improve the cognitive decision-making skills in other areas of life, too. In addition, they often rely on thinking strategically about what an opponent might do. This can help people to gain more empathy in their thoughts about others and how to use it to gain an advantage. Many games also rely on working out the likelihood of an event occurring, which will mean using mathematics practically, too.

Which board games can be played online?

Although most board games are designed for a physical environment, some lend themselves to computerized versions very well. For example, Risk is a popular turn-based war game that involves many dice rolls and piece movements. When played online, these can be automated, making for a much faster and engaging game. Chess has long been played online, as has backgammon, Scrabble and Cluedo. When played online, however, some of the sociability of playing is necessarily lost.

The global market for board games is going up. This is partially accounted for by the numerous lockdowns that were in place in 2020 all over the world as people sought traditional forms of entertainment. That said, this trend was already in place well before then, so it seems these beloved games are here to stay for some time to come.
