are crucial virtues to be directed not only towards others but towards ourselves as well

What’s the difference between kindness and compassion? Where does altruism fit in to all this?

We sometimes view kindness as a small immediate act, like giving someone on the street your loose change. Compassion suggests acting and thinking of a bigger picture and longer term goals. For example building a homeless shelter or donating your old books to a school library.

Moving further into the realm is altruism. The act of helping others, without a thought of reciprocation, energizes and improves our own happiness to a deep level of contentedness.

But with all this external effort, it’s important to not forget ourselves. Showing ourselves a little bit of kindness and compassion can go a long way in our search for the ultimate goal: happiness.
